I have such fond memories of Elora Gorge that I couldn't wait to take
Nancy
on a hike there. The big debate however was to go now, at the beginning of summer, or go later when we could tube down the Gorge. Never being one for patience, we decided to do it now… and then again later!
I must admit I was very disappointed when we got there. The park service has decided to fence in the entire hiking park to the gorge. Now, to tell the truth, my buddy almost died there when he decided to try climbing across a branch to get into the gorge itself... but still. They seem to have turned the whole thing into a super-safe family fun zone, instead of what it should be... natural beauty. I mean, how long will it be before these people want to put all the bears in Algonquin park in cages so it's safe for everyone? (OK, I was going to continue my rant, but you get the message)

Alright, nostalgic memories aside and with reality setting in, let’s get back to how the conservation area is very beautiful and how there is so much to keep you busy! The gorge itself is next to impossible to get to from the hiking pathsyou’ll need to loop around and over the bridge. We took a walk down to the tubing launch point to get a closer view. Since we were pre-camping, pre-rushing waters, we were able to walk along the shores of the river and sit peacefully for a little while. A couple sporting fishing rods set up camp a 100m upriver from us and a group of day-trippers gathering in a coming area with their guitars, as we were making our way back up the steep incline to the road.
This conservation area offers camping, canoeing, fishing, hiking, cycling, swimming, picnicking and TUBING! You, a helmet, a life jacket and an inner tube are all that it takes to jettison down the Grand River (well, those and about $20). Conveniently, the $20 rental package can be purchased at the beach concession stand and the equipment is yours to keep until
7 p.m.
Translation: you can take multiple runs down the river! There is a shuttle (though its runs are limited) that will drive you back to the launch point.

The Elora Gorge CA has volleyball nets, basketball nets, baseball diamonds, a football field and all of the running room you’ll need during your visit. Lots of picnic tables too… making it a great place for an organized group or family picnic. Overall, I would have to stay that the park is more designed for camping, gorge appreciation and the aforementioned sports rather than lengthy hiking (not that there is anything wrong with that ;). Though the 3 km of walking trails are amazing and provide for some stunning views of the gorge below, you’ll have to walk along the campsite paths once you’ve completed this trek.
We’re looking forward to our next visitand our tubing experience!

Once you actually get down into the gorge itself, it's stunningly beautiful. Deep forest covered cliffs, tiny waterfalls all over the place, great fishing area. And the best part was we had it all to ourselves.

Looks a bit like a brick wall, but it's all natural. If I remember correctly, the huge pressures and waters from the last ice age formed this type of rock.
