| Up at 2:00AM plus a 3 hour straight drive to Algonquin equal some great wildlife shooting opportunities.
Moose love coming out to HW 60, and munch on the salty marshes around the roads. (Here in Canada, we salt the crap out of our roads, and the spring rain washes it all into the ditches). |

| I tore into Algonquin park just as the sun was starting to rise. Never having done this before I was not sure what I should be looking for.
I didn't see much the first time I drove across the park. This early in the morning there is not a lot of traffic, so you can safely drive a little below the speed limit and keep your eyes peeled. It's also a fairly easy thing to pull the car over to the side of the road to get pictures (I believe this is legal inside Algonquin Park). After driving back and forth a couple of times, you kind of get the feeling as to where the moose are most likely to be. |

| There are large areas of wetlands to either side of the road that yield the best results. Don't bother trying to peer into the forest or focus too hard on little patches... It's the big ones that will most likely have the moose.
Keep an eye to the side of the road as well, as moose sometimes walk along the ditches. (Don't worry, they are huge, you won't miss them... actually that can be a problem, they are huge and if they are in the middle of the road, you probably wont miss them) |

You don't have to do this, the moose will be obvious, BUT feel free to pull over any ways and take some pictures. | Just when I was starting to get a little frustrated, I saw this moose in the middle of a field. (S)He was kind enough to stay in one general area until I had my fill of pictures. I had probably driven across Algonquin 2 times by this point.
I was shooting with a 70-200 2.8 VR, plus a 2x teleconverter. This allowed me to get nice and close, but I probably should have used a tripod more. |

I really need to get a polarizing filter. If your skies always seem to be blown out white, then you should pick one up as well.

| I finally pulled into the park welcome station around 9:00 and paid my park fee. (You should do it when you first arrive, but I was too excited!). The park ranger mentioned you get the best sightings from dawn to about 9:00 ish. This is when the road really starts to get busy, and scares most of the moose away.
On the wall in the welcome station is a chalkboard that lists all of the days sighting of animals. You can get a sense as to what to keep an eye out for here. I decided to take one more trip across Algonquin, even if it was getting a little late fore moose. |

The loon is the provincial bird of Ontario (ever wondered why our one dollar coin is called a loonie?)
Lots of great shots of these birds all across the park.I always though their patterns area little odd until I noticed how much they blend into the rippling water. |

This one is a cheat... If you don't get any shots in Algonquin Park, hit the Muskoka Wildlife Centre on the way back from Algonquin park and you are almost assured a moose shot.
