| If you learned to scuba dive in the Toronto area, chances are that you've done a training dive at Kirkfield. With a bunch of neat stuff hanging out at the bottom of a 30 foot deep quarry, great visibility and not-so-cold water, it's an awesome place to get started with scuba diving. Essentially, you can pull up, park and wade into the water.... that is, until about 50 feet out when there is a fairly sudden drop off when the depth triples. At the bottom, you'll find a boat, many cars, some trees, a plane, some "artwork," a 20 foot long statue of a diver made out of metal (apparently part of scuba shop sponsored float for a parade), and some fish that will keep an eye on you. About an hour and half drive from Toronto, the quarry is found in Kirkfield, Ontario. It's a relativity low-maintenance site (i.e., no campground or summer recreation facilities like other quarries) and boat-free (yep, no boating or fishing allowed here!) Of course, that means that there are no facilities or convenience stores either. That being said, this site is still VERY popular and you'll probably always have company, at least! The entry fee is $10 per diver, you must make reservations to dive on this property (since it is privately owned), and typically there must be a minimum number of divers (about 20) for the quarry to be opened.
